Abstract
Introduction: This study was performed to evaluate the accuracy and the source of error in the methods used to assess the prosthetic acetabular anteversion using plain radiographs.

Materials and methods: Using the experimental model, AP and lateral radiographs were repetitively taken under the various possible erroneous conditions. The anteversions were measured using three methods in AP and by the direct method in the axial radiographs three times. The data was collected and compared with the known true values.

Results: If the radiographs were true AP or lateral, the measured anteversions showed statistically correct values regardless of the methods used. The maximum error difference was < 1¡Æ. All the measured anteversions from the AP and axial radiographs showed significant variations according to the simulated errors when taking the radiographs.

Discussion: The anteversion measured from the AP radiograph can be reliably used because of the small number of inevitable variables. However, the data from the axial film might be unreliable due to the many variables that can be present when taking the plain axial radiographs,. Therefore great caution should be taken when using axial film to evaluate an acetabular anteversion.
